Sugarcane

Sugarcane, founded and facilitated by Yvonne Onakeme Etaghene, is an eight-week writing workshop that provides a loving space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer writers of color to deeply work their work. Writers are encouraged (but not required) to bring old, new, completed, incomplete/in-progress work to a group of people who will listen, offer rich, constructive feedback and lovingly suggest ways to improve their work.

Sugarcane is a space to bring subject matter that you don’t have to explain or justify or feel self-conscious about, a space to bring work you want to ascend/soar to higher levels and deepen into its own roots. This workshop engages with and lovingly utilizes June Jordan’s Poetry for the People guidelines to explore and share the unique and individual brilliance of our writing.  All creative writing genres welcome; experienced and new writers welcome.) Sugarcane workshops culminate in a performance showcase where writers share their work with community members.
